The injections prevent selected muscles from repeatedly contracting, thereby creating wrinkles.
Anti-wrinkle injectables are a popular non-surgical injection that temporarily reduces or eliminates frown lines, forehead creases, crows feet near the eyes and thick bands in the neck.
The product blocks the nerve impulses, temporarily paralysing the muscles that cause wrinkles while giving the skin a smoother, more refreshed appearance.
Many studies have also suggested that the injectables are effective in relieving migraine headaches, excessive sweating and muscle spasms in the neck and eyes.
These products can also be used to re-shape the brow and position of the eyebrows. 6
The patient should see a gradual softening of their wrinkles over the two-week period following anti-wrinkle treatment. If used correctly the patient experiences good results, and depending on their individual characteristics, this medication can last between 3-7 months.
The Procedure
Our cosmetic doctor will do the complementary consultation with every new patient considering anti-wrinkle treatment for no out of pocket cost.
During the consultation it is important that a full medical history is taken, photographs are taken and patients discuss their needs. Then the location and dose of anti-wrinkle injections will be advised.
Anti-wrinkle medication can be administered on the first visit. It is injected via very small needles into the regions that the individual would like to relax.
The full effect of the treatment can take up to two weeks to be seen.
What we can improve
+ Forehead wrinkles
Forehead lines are the most common area for anti-wrinkle injections. They can be treated by performing injections into the forehead muscles to reduce activity of the muscle and therefore treat wrinkles.
These wrinkles can be softened allowing for natural movement, some clinets prefer to have no movement.
+ Crows feet wrinkles
These wrinkles are formed by over activity of the ring muscle that surround the eye known as orbicularis oculi.
These injections are performed into the muscle around the eyes to soften these lines. We usually treat these lines gently to leave some natural facial expression.
This procedure can be combined with cheek or lateral tear trough Dermal fillers or eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty).
+ Frown lines
These lines treatment are the best to make the patient look less “angry”.
Frown lines can be treated by performing injections into the frown muscles to reduce activity of the muscle and therefore treat wrinkles.
Again like any other areas, clients would need different number of units depends on howmuch of movement (facial expression) they want to achieve.
+ Mental crease (Chin dimpling)
The muscle of the chin (mentalis) becomes more active as we get older. The end result will contribute to shortening of the lower third of the face and looking ‘aged’.
This muscle is treated with muscle relaxing injections to soften its action. These reduces the dimpling and crease of the chin and allows it to naturally lengthen.
+ Lip flip
This treatment is to relax the muscle on the upper lip and create more eversion (outward show) of the upper lip. We quite often combine this treatment with lip filler to produce an enhanced upper lip.
+ Gummy smile
A ‘gummy smile’ is one where more than 2-3 mm of gum shows above the teeth when smiling.
Approximately 10% of people show their gums when they smile. With this affordable treatment (usually less than $150) the result will be achieved in 5 days and will last for about 4 months.
+ Bunny lines
Bunny lines form due to repeated contraction of the muscle known as ‘nasalis’. These lines can form if you are having repeat anti-wrinkle treatment to the frown and forehead – the bunny area starts can become more active and noticeable.
We usally place between 2 – 3 units of anti-wrinkle product on each side of the nose into nasalis muscle.
+ Facial (jawline) slimming
This treatment is one of our most popular treatments at Elite Medical Centre.
Anti-wrinkle injection can be used to slim the face when injected into the angle of the jaw (the masseter muscle).
By using approximately 25 units each side (50 units totally) in the jaw area, anti-wrinkle injections can slim prominent jawlines and create a more aethetically pleasing facial contour.
+ Tooth grinding (Bruxism)
Bruxism is the term given to grinding teeth. It can be very distressing for patients and cause wear of the teeth and headaches. Patients often complain of a morning headache because they have been tensing and grinding the teeth at night.
Anti-wrinkle injections reduce the strength of the bite muscle (the masseter muscle). This reduces the ability to grind the back teeth at night which can reduce the symptoms of tooth wear, jaw ache and headache that patients can experience as a result of grinding.
+ Migraine (headache)
Tension headaches are often the result of overuse of the frontalis muscle in the forehead. Frontalis is the muscle of the forehead that lifts the eyebrows,
By treating the frown and forehead with anti-wrinkle injections some patients with migraines and tension can get improvement in their symptoms.
We generally use between 5 and 10 units to achieve relaxation of the muscle.
Possible Complications With Anti-Wrinkle Treatment
- Not enough medication, will not give you the result you would like (individually determined depending on the problem the patient is attempting to correct, their age, skin laxity and expression used).
- Bruising may occur, but resolves in time, cover can be used.
- Injection discomfort
- If you discontinue use, you will revert to your previous wrinkle load. Anti wrinkle treatments don’t increase the amount of wrinkles that you have, you will just be unaccustomed to what your wrinkles look like.
Anti-Wrinkle Treatment Maintenance
We may suggest maintaining your treatment generally every 4-6 months to maintain the overall benefit. However, it might be a bit different in clients, and we will advise you based on your particular skin type and range of age.
